Cleanings and Exams

Scheduling biannual dental cleanings, along with an annual exam, is the second most basic step in your dental health, following daily brushing.

Your dental cleaning with our professional hygienist is important to the health of your periodontal tissue, also known as your gum tissue. The gums surround and support your teeth; you want them to remain free of bacteria and infection. During your appointment, the hygienist will measure and track the separation of tissue from the teeth, spot any buildup of tartar or calculus, and then remove any harmful bacteria that could be irritating the tissue.

The removal of tartar is done with the use of an ultrasonic scaler and then checked with a hand scaler to ensure that all debris has been cleared. Most adult cleanings will require scaling and then the smoothing of the roots through root planing. Cleanings are completed with polishing the teeth using a gritty toothpaste and a rotary brush.

Your dental exam is completed by our dentist. During this exam, we will look for both visible and non-visible indications of decay and infection. Using a probe and dental x-rays, we will track and look for trouble areas. If anything is found, we will then discuss treatment options specific to your needs. Read more about Cleanings and Exams.

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment is for the treatment of gum disease. For most patients, periodontal treatment can be administered through a deep cleaning, known as scaling and root planing. Patients who suffer from chronic periodontitis, or infection of the gum tissue, we may ask to see the patient more often, and some patients may require surgical assistance in growing new healthy tissue. Children's Dentistry

Meeting regularly, at least twice a year, with your minor age child is important to their dental health. We strive to create and maintain a positive working relationship with our pediatric patients. How your child feels about dental care in their youth can greatly impact their long-term dental health.

We hope to show them the tools we use, explain the treatments we perform, and discuss the techniques that can help keep their teeth healthy. Additionally, we want to make predictions in their oral health taking the teeth placement and decay levels into consideration. There are steps that we can take to put them on a better course. Fluoride Treatment

Regardless of your oral hygiene practices, the chances are good that you will experience tooth decay at some point in your life. However, there are steps you can take to protect your teeth and reduce these occurrences. At College Hill Dental, we offer professional fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay and help you maintain excellent oral health. Read more about Fluoride Treatment.

Dental Sealants

Regular brushing and flossing are essential for keeping your teeth clean and healthy. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. Even with good oral hygiene practices, however, there are some areas of your mouth that are harder to maintain than others. The chewing surfaces of your molars are particularly vulnerable to cavities. They contain deep grooves and crevices that can easily trap food particles, bacteria, and other debris. At College Hill Dental, we can provide additional cavity protection with dental sealants. Read more about Dental Sealants.

Bite Guards

Bite guards can be customized to protect your teeth. There are generally two scenarios when bite guards are needed, for playing sports and for patients who suffer from bruxism.

So many of our pediatric patients participate in both team and individual sports, and we know you want to support their hard work, while also keeping them safe. Mouth related injuries are very common in sports, from broken teeth, to knocked out teeth, and biting hard on soft tissue, we have seen it all. Simply wearing a bite guard can reduce dental problems, which in turn reduces painful problems and expensive restorations.

Bruxism is a common sleeping disorder in which the patient unconsciously grinds or clenches their teeth. This is often a temporary disorder but can be highly destructive. Wearing a bite guard while you can save you painful problems and expensive restorations. Read more about Bite Guards.
