Bite Guards

Night Guards

Eugene, OR dentist holding a bite guard.A bite guard, or mouthguard, is a customized device that we can create to protect your teeth when playing sports or for patients who suffer from bruxism. This small and simple device can save your teeth trauma while saving you money. Working with our staff at College Hill Dental, we can help you find the perfect fit, adding to your comfort and increasing your likelihood of wearing it when it’s most needed.

A bite guard is a plastic device that we mold to the size and shape of your mouth to protect your teeth. When worn, it can protect your teeth from an impact injury, or the damage of grinding and clenching. Having a better fit increases your protection while also making it more comfortable.

Sports Bite Guard

Oral related injuries are the most numerous form of injury obtained when engaging in team and individual sport. From broken, fractured teeth, to fully avulsed or knocked out teeth, children, teens, and adults, statistically take a big hit when being active. The answer is not to avoid playing outside; we want you to be active, we also want to protect your teeth. A bite guard can let you do both.

Some sports require mouthguards or bite guards, but our patients should consider them even when they are not. If you are playing with a ball, a bat, running, climbing, or riding something on wheels, a sports guard is right for you.

Bruxism Bite Guard

Bruxism is a common dental condition; it often manifests at night while you are sleeping. Bruxism is the unconscious or subconscious clenching and grinding of your teeth. This is generally a short-lived condition but can be highly destructive. Patients with bruxism can experience fractured, cracked, broken or flattened teeth, which can be highly painful and expensive to restore. Additionally, patients can create tiny hairline fractures that they are unaware of, but bacteria can work its way in and infect the inner pulp portion of the tooth.

During your dental visit, we will try to spot the signs of bruxism, but if you are aware of the symptoms, it is to your benefit to prevent damage. The symptoms of bruxism include waking with a tightness feeling in your jaw and a release of tension. Some patients wake with headaches, jaw aches or toothaches.

Store Bought Bite Guards

There is a variety of store-bought bite guards available, and they are better than none, but we recommend a customized bite guard. There are both pre-made and boil and bite styles available. The downside is, store-bought bite guards come in a one size fits all style, this means that many patients find them bulky and uncomfortable. If it’s uncomfortable, the patient is less likely to wear it. Please wear it, and wear it comfortably, whenever it is needed.

Protect your teeth, and save money, by having your bite guard custom sized to fit. The time in the chair and money you will save by preventing damage is worth it.
