How Your Oral Health Might Be Causing Dry MouthDry mouth is a condition where the flow of saliva is affected, and as a result, your mouth will quite literally feel dry.

This might not sound like a big deal, but dry mouth can lead to a host of oral health issues, including cavities and bad breath. Read on to learn more about the condition and how your oral health might be the culprit.

Signs of Dry Mouth

Besides a mouth that feels dry and parched, there are other signs of dry mouth for which you should be aware:

•  Bad breath
•  Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or talking
•  Saliva that feels thick may also indicate the presence of dry mouth

The Causes of Dry Mouth

Dry mouth occurs when the salivary glands aren't able to produce enough saliva to keep your mouth lubricated. One of the top causes is the use of certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and pain medications. Should you use any of these medications as a result of an oral health problem or another medical concern, dry mouth may be a side effect.

For some people, dry mouth is just a "normal" part of the aging process. In addition to using more medications, poor nutrition or chronic illnesses may lead to a dry mouth. Health conditions like stroke, diabetes, or even an oral yeast infection may result in decreased saliva production.

How Dry Mouth Affects Your Oral Health

Unfortunately, dry mouth can have a variety of consequences on your oral health. These include:

•  Mouth sores
•  Oral thrush
•  Sores on the corners of the mouth
•  Cracked lips
•  Increased plaque, which can lead to gum disease and tooth decay

If you notice that your mouth seems drier than normal, it is important to talk to your dentist about the issue. Not only can we help to identify the cause of your dry mouth, but we'll also protect your oral health by creating a solution. Call us today to learn more.
